Boobiefest (not Boobyfest, though he's cool, too)

I've been breastfeeding Nibbler pretty much since he was born. I was very gung-ho about the whole endeavor, but I'll tell you, it hasn't been easy. I've discovered a few things over the past nine weeks:

  • drugs designed to increase your supply will sometimes make your boobs leak so much, you'll think your baby has peed the bed five times over.

  • fenugreek makes your pits smell like maple syrup (but unappetizingly so).

  • sometimes, neither boob will make your baby happy, and this is why we have the third boob, commonly known as the pacifier.

  • while breastfeeding is convenient in the middle of the night, your husband can never really help out with it (rubbing your back as you hoist your kid up on your chest for the 5th time doesn't count). You may resent this despite your best intentions, if you're me.

  • the trade-off for not getting help in the wee hours can be that Daddy fields all poopy diapers.

  • There's nothing like a little side-lying nursing to make you feel like Fluffy, in a box under the stairs.

  • Breastfeeding depletes estrogen, which leads to a lack of interest in reconvening the procedure*. This is tantamount to a divorce decree in these parts; times have been tough since Nibbler's arrival. But he's getting all his nutrients.

  • Pumping makes me think I need to switch to soymilk if this is what is done to cows all damn day long.

  • Cats seem to like stepping on babies who are chillin' breastside on the Boppy pillow. Yowch!

*Never fear, the procedure has been reconvened and who knows, maybe Nibbler will have himself a sister someday after Mommy stops screaming in pain. Kidding!

I don't know what fenugreek is, but I don't think I want to take it.

Or me.

"Reconvening the procedure." Tee hee!

About fenugreek--you totally hit the nail on the head. I think there was some of that stuff in the tea we got in Chinatown, too.

What other stuff can you take to increase your supply? I'm having a hard time keeping up with my boys' demands, in spite of my moo-rific extra pumping.

Do you know how much he looks like you??!!! It's amazing.

Dude. I'm not sure we're going to be reconvening anything anytime soon. Good for you.

I was terribly afraid I wouldn't be able to breastfeed, wouldn't make enough milk etc. Turns out I needn't have worried... I'm literally producing enough to feed triplets. Thank god the milk bank is taking all my extra, so at least it's not going to waste.
I do envy you being able to feed in bed. We wanted to cosleep but it turns out I'm such a light sleeper and so is Myles, that we can't sleep in the same room, so I have to get up at night to feed him. That part sucks.
Love the photo! We tried to take a few of those but my boob usually eclipses the baby's head.

Yes, he DOES look like you! Both mine looked like my husband (and, thusly, my mother-in-law) when they were infants. That was disconcerting is so many ways.

Reconvening after 2 months? Good for you, for wanting to, or making the effort, or giving in, or... maybe "good for you" is not the sentiment I'm looking for. I had the "tantamount to divorce" situation as well, and this made me wholly un-willing. I did/do not like to be made to feel guilty about having a low sex-drive. As if it's my choice. Hmph. (Some positions were worse than others, by the way, and reconvening in the shower with the baby sleeping in a bouncy chair nearby made it less nerve-wracking.)

Aren't they cute when they are nursing? I loved nursing, but pumping milk 2-3 times a day...bit the big one. My hubs called me the milk truck and yes, it also gave me a new appreciate for the cows, but we still drink the stuff at home (cow milk that is).
