My '80s Alter Ego

I just saw this little tidbit on Moonshine, where Izzy identifies pretty closely with Molly Ringwald. I must admit, Molly is an icon, and she made it cool to be the alterna-girl with dreams above her station. But my alter ego of the '80s was the puckish Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts in Some Kind of Wonderful.

I dyed my hair blonde on top to mimic hers in that film (luckily, it turned out red). I had the oh-so-new-wave fingerless gloves (fringeless, much to my teenage chagrin). I wanted to be a drummer (though not enough to buy a drum kit or anything ... just a bizarre fantasy). Her character made me feel validated about being boyish without necessarily being gay. Plus, she was totally bitchy and still got the guy (not that Eric Stoltz is any prize, but you get my meaning).

Whatever happened to her, anyway?

But my God, you're quick! I loved MSM in SKoW. It was just on cable the other day. What was her name? Sticks? Styx? Something like that. Cool alter ego :-)

Seems like I just heard something about Mary Stuart Masterson very recently, though I don't remember what.

Like Izzy, I was a Molly Ringwald fan myself. Always wanted to look like her in "Sixteen Candles."

I didn't want to look like Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts. I wanted either to be or do Mary Stuart Masterson as Watts. She was my first official girl crush.

Loving all the pix of you, BTW. What most caught my eye was not the bad hair, however, but the Miracle Legion poster in the "party girl" picture. I so, so loved Miracle Legion. And wearing tights with cutoffs and combat boots. Ah, the 90s.

I loved her in Fried Green Tomatoes (but not in THAT way).

My idol would have been like Pat Benatar or someone like that.

What DID happen to her? Now I'm all curious.

I loved that she was the anti-Lea Thompson in that movie. Yay for non-conformist chicks.

The last flick I remember seeing MSM in was called _Bed of Roses_. It was a sappy romance with Christian Slater as the leading man. I'm going to Google her to find out what she's been up to.

Fried Green Tomatos is one of my FAVORITE movies. I adore her. I have never been a big fan of Molly Ringwald. Looking at Mary's picture makes me want to chop all my hair off again.

Molly Ringwald was okay, but I loved Claire Danes in My So-Called Life. I was so upset when that show got cancelled!

GG, I still have fantasies that MSCL is still on. I will forever love Claire Danes and (that slut) Jordan Catalano because of that show. And there were what? 10 episodes or something sad like that?

I thought Molly was cool in that awkward kind of way. Mary? She's beautiful.

She was awesome in Fried Green Tomatoes...of course, I didn't realize she loved the other gal until years later, so naive, sigh...

She's who I wish I was. Girls that drum are so freaking cool.

In actuality, I was more Farmer Ted from Sixteen Candles.

MSM's latest role was as a Dr. on Law & Order:SVU. She's still beautiful.

I wanted to be either Ally Sheedy's character in "St. Elmo's Fire" or Demi Moore's. I wanted to live that movie.
